AASHTO Journal, 2 September 2011

With the theme “Leading in Lean Times,” this year’s AASHTO Annual Meeting features technical and transportation policy sessions as well as a collection of educational workshops that focus on innovation and sharing best practices. A few examples include:Detroit’s innovative approach to rethinking the automobile will be the emphasis in the “The Vehicle of the Future: Greener, Safer, Smarter” session, which will provide information regarding automobile technologies to prevent collisions and reduce emissions, as well as innovative ways to integrate smart-grid technology with electric vehicles. As the auto industry transforms, state transportation officials need to understand what progress is being made and what the impacts may be on infrastructure owners and operators.

States and the private sector are finding ways to maximize limited transportation dollars. The “Leveraging Limited Dollars: Maximizing Bonding” panel features state CEOs and private-sector experts discussing innovative projects that have stretched or leveraged limited funds. Speakers will also discuss the techniques that led to the adoption of these approaches.

As always, time will be set aside to mix and exchange ideas with others in the transportation industry during evening functions.
