A field application of a scrub seal containing beneficiated reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) on busy I-10 in Southern California saved money for Caltrans, the owning agency, and is providing performance equal to or better than conventional materials.
Caltrans’ District 8 discovered that RAP could be processed on-site to an engineered, high-value product that met the state’s chip specification. The district’s innovation resulted in the agency saving the cost of purchasing new aggregate as part of the process, but also allowed Caltrans to realize a significant hidden value of the stockpiled material.
